Ruling party CCM in Tanzania are divided like previos ruling party KANU in Kenya ?

CCM secretary-general Yusuf Makamba has defended his boss against the accusations that he is too weak to take decisions on grand corruption.

Mr Makamba said at a press conference yesterday that the accusations against President Jakaya Kikwete, who is the ruling party chairman, were baseless.

Mr Makamba quoted heavily from the holly books to attack those agitating for his boss' early exit.

President Kikwete's administration has come under fierce attacks from various quarters, with the latest negative comments coming out of a symposium organised by the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation early this week.

Some of those who accused President Kikwete of being too soft include former ministers Matheo Qares and Musa Nkhangaa. They said on different occasions that it would be better if CCM chose another presidential candidate for next year's general elections.

"In the book of the Romans 13:1, it is said that every person is supposed to obey his leaders because all administrative powers come from God.

In the Qur-an, God has also said, through his prophet, you should obey your God and his prophet (S.A.W) and all those who have administrative powers," said Mr Makamba asking, "President Kikwete has power among us, why are we ridiculing him?" He added: " Nkhangaa and Qares were regional commissioners like me, we know each other well."

Mr Makamba said the detractors were angry for losing out to the incumbent during the 2005 party nominations. He belittled them, saying CCM had no time to discuss such errant cadres as they have no influence in the ruling party.

He reminded the reporters on the findings from a research conducted by Research on Democracy and Education (Redet), showing that President Kikwete's performance was outstanding.

He said the research also indicated that President Kikwete's performance had benefited CCM which remains most popular party in the country.

"We can't dump Kikwete because he is our political capital. I am saying he is our political capital because it is his performance which keeps the government and CCM ahead of other political institutions in the country,"he said.

On allegations that President Kikwete has been hesitant in making hard decisions, Mr Makamba asked: "What kind of decisions are they referring to? Haven't they seen what the President is doing?"

He said President Kikwetes decision to allow his colleagues from the cabinet to be charged in court was one of serious decisions to be made by the head of the State. He also queried the basis of reports that businessmen and rich people have dominated CCM.

"Philemon Ndesamburo is a very rich man but we can't say that Chadema is a party for the rich simply because one of its leaders is rich," he clarified.
