Renowned scholar Professor Ali Al’amin Mazrui has been laid to rest

Renowned scholar Professor Ali Al’amin Mazrui has been laid to rest at the 900-year-old Mazrui family cemetery in old town Mombasa, fulfilling part of his will to be buried there with his ancestors. Hundreds of mourners including local leaders and international peers attended the final send-off of the globally acclaimed lecturer. President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogised Professor Mazrui as a towering academic while chief justice dr. Willy Mutunga who was in attendance and considers the late professor as a confidant gave a stinging rebuke of the different regimes under which the scholar lived and died. The plane carrying the body of the late Professor Ali Mazrui touched down at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa early today, Sunday at 2:35 am.The ceremony began with special prayers for the late scholar led by Professor Ali Al-Amin Mazrui at the Mbaruk mosque in Mombasa.In attendance were dignitaries led by Mombasa county governor Ali Hassan Joho, Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga and National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale among others.Duale who was representing President Uhuru Kenyatta in the event hailed the late scholar for his contribution to the literature world. Thousands of Kenyans also turned out to pay their last respects to the late scholar.The late Mazrui was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon.Mazrui died in the US while in hospital.
