The Tanzania Football Federation and the Zanzibar Football Association have formed a ten-strong half-half committee to recommend ways to resolve long-standing differences between the two bodies.

The main aim is to forestall a looming crisis that could tear Tanzania’s soccer to pieces.

Zanzibar legislator and retired soccer official Hafidh Ali Tahir will chair the team, assisted by TFF secretary general Frederick Mwakalebela as secretary. These will champion efforts to deal with the factors that have put the development of the game in the country at serious peril.

It is hoped that the duo will devise a formula that will work the magic needed to ensure that the looming crisis does not materialize and whatever problems that may be landmines or thorns that may be on the way will be safely cleared.

But TFF and ZFA should not be left to fight the war alone because, without popular support, there will be precious little they could do to help the country excel in the game locally, regionally, continentally and internationally.

Tanzania did very poorly according to FIFA rankings before improving last month to break into double digits, and is still far from achieving satisfaction from the fans at home.

We must therefore give out all in organising our senior and youth national soccer teams if we are to perform even better. Pointing accusing fingers at each other won’t help.

With Zanzibar’s dream of landing FIFA membership all but shattered, it is high time the two soccer bodies came closer together and wage a united war seeking to earn Tanzania glory in easily the number one sport in the country.

The joint committee must find a permanent solution to problems relating to the allocation and use of FIFA funding to Tanzania, over which Zanzibar has always raised serious reservations.

Sports, especially soccer, ought to be a means to build bridges between the two sides of the Union as well as make our people happier and more motivated instead of fuelling mutual mistrust.

Sports may not be a Union matter par excellence, but we are duty bound to live like the true blood brothers and sisters that we are when it comes to participation in international events.

Sports should not be used to rock the Union boat; rather, it should be a catalyst to bind us together for enhanced prosperity, peace and development.

We know of countries where sports has demonstrated itself as a medium able to dissolve religious, racial, nationality and various other aspects of life that separate human beings across the globe.

Whether ZFA should be merged with TFF, the goal should be to groom Tanzania into an ever greater soccer nation to be reckoned with.

Should we fail to agree on a common formula to guide us into the future, it is hard to see Tanzania participate in international soccer any more competitively than currently obtains.

Neighbours would be highly shocked with what is happening between TFF and ZFA if no consensus is reached, while the country has won accolades in maintaining peace for decades.
