State Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office Hamza Hassan Juma said two families of local government leaders escaped death yesterday after some unknown people set two landmines near their houses.

Hamza revealed this in Pemba soon after his meeting with local government leaders to discuss issuing of residential permits. Local leaders in Pemba have been blamed for delaying the process.

Residential permits are used in Zanzibar as essential identities for a person to be registered as a voter.

Hamza said the incident occurred on Monday night after a group of unknown people placed landmines near Msuka and Konde leaders in Northern Pemba region. He said one of the houses was partially destroyed while the other one was not affected.

Hamza said in another incident, some unknown people had fixed beehives in voter registration centres in Pemba. He said the beehives were meant to threaten registration officers.

Meanwhile, the Zanzibar Electoral Commission yesterday held a meeting to discuss voter registration problems that had cropped up in Pemba.
