The saga on Rapper accused of criticising Tanzania President now fear his life

The release of a rapper arrested for launching a song deemed insulting to the government.Wako, the new song by Ney wa Mitego, talks about a “doctor” who does not appear to want “advice” or “criticism.”Interpreted as referring to President John Magufuli, the song has become a hit on social media. Information Minister Harrison Mwakyembe told journalists Magufuli had “no problem” with the song and that the government had decided to order the release of Mitego, who was arrested in Morogoro in the east on Sunday.

Mitego’s arrest came amid growing concern over freedom of expression in the East African country after information minister Nape Nnauye was sacked and replaced by Mwakyembe on March 20. Nnauye had tried to investigate a senior official, allegedly close to the President, who had attempted to force the airing of a broadcast critical of a clergyman he was not on good terms with.
