President Jakaya Kikwete
President Jakaya Kikwete has said the formation of a government of national unity in Zanzibar is the only viable and lasting solution to the political woes the Isles have known since the reintroduction of multipartism in Tanzania the early 1990s.
He made the remarks at a rally at Maisara grounds here yesterday after receiving a procession of CCM youth in remembrance of Zanzibar’s founding President, Abeid Amani Karume.
The president said the ruling CCM, of which is the national chairman, has had lengthy deliberations of the idea (of Zanzibar having a government of national unity) and resolved to pass it on to wananchi for a final word through a referendum “because we are sure the system will ease or even end the politics of hate”.
President Kikwete urged the people of Zanzibar to support the decision which he said will help to build national unity.
He exhorted CCM members not to give forum to people distorting the objective behind the formation of the government of national unity, saying this would defeat the progress made so far.
The people of Zanzibar are expected to vote in a referendum at a date to be announced by the President of Zanzibar, after the House of Representatives passed a law allowing the poll.
