One person was killed and several other people were injured in violent clashes on Sunday at a mosque in the coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya.Violent clashes between the police and Muslim youths erupted at Masjid Musa Mosque in Mombasa.
Teargas was fired and gunshots could be heard from the scene.Police officers had stormed the mosque to bring down 'al-Shabaab' flags that had been hoisted at the mosque when an officer was attacked and robbed of his gun.Two officers were injured and witnesses said several other youths were also wounded in the confrontation.Police said the youths who seem radicalized had hoisted 'al-Shabaab' flag in the mosque when the confrontation broke out at about noon.
The youths have invaded several mosques and forcefully taken over the leadership to preach Jihad sermons.The government has warned of decisive action against the radicalization of Muslim youths believed to be behind runaway crimes at the coast.Deputy President William Ruto said last month the government was concerned over increasing radicalization and recruitment of Muslim youths from the coast to fight for terrorists groups in the region, adding that they would be dealt with.
